ELFA: 800 European fibre operators call for better regulation for fair competition
The European Local Fibre Alliance (ELFA) shares the European Union’s ambition to bring fibre to all European households and businesses by 2030. Only fibre connectivity provides true gigabit speeds with the lowest possible latency and energy consumption, laying the foundation for a digital and sustainable Europe. ELFA supports the EU’s recent policy initiatives as they provide better incentives for faster roll-out of fibre including reducing the risk of anti-competitive overbuild. ELFA also welcomes the European Commission’s white paper for a Digital Networks Act as it would call for implementing copper switch-off in the foreseeable future in a fair manner which avoids distortions of competition. However, it is calling for definite actions to deliver this, as Europe’s future depends on fibre networks.

EU Digital Networks Act: Fair competition in fibre and mobile roll-out needs action instead of words
The European Commission wants to support the fibre and mobile network roll-out in Europe by strengthening the telecommunications industry. That's a good thing. Reduce bureaucratic hurdles, improve the framework conditions for private investment: The White Paper’s key ideas point into the right direction.

Gigabit Infrastructure Act: EU compromise no help for fibre roll-out in Germany
After months of negotiations, the Gigabit Infrastructure Act unfortunately ends up as a lukewarm compromise that fails to significantly facilitate the mobile and fibre network roll-out in Europe. An additional rule that would have jeopardised fibre investments was only removed at the last minute. However, hardly any of the positive approaches of previous drafts made it into the final version.

BREKO statement regarding EU Council's General Approach on the Gigabit Infrastructure Act (GIA)
Today, the Council of the European Union endorsed a negotiating mandate (‘general approach’) for the upcoming “trilogue” negotiations with the European Parliament and the European Commission regarding the proposed Gigabit Infrastructure Act (GIA). The German Broadband Association BREKO welcomes the overall goal of the GIA to accelerate fiber deployment and reduce its cost. While some measures proposed by the Council will bring the necessary flexibility to address specificities at the member state level, other changes proposed by the Council seem less conducive to accelerate the rollout of fiber networks.
